3rd Party Software Problems

Now that we've gotten through the January 2010 updates, there is a side issue that I wanted to address. That is, this issue of updating third party software, and especially software tools like Adobe Reader, etc.

As most people know, these kinds of tools are usually used by most computer users and unless you are notified by the author, rarely do these tools get updated. Of course, when your machine crashes, you run to the author's site and get the latest version <G>.

The Long March Begins...

As most people know, Microsoft has set a product life cycle for most, if not all of it's products. I won't go into the evils that Microsoft forces it's customer through to keep the cash flowing, but it is necessary to remind everyone that these lifecycles affect everyone who uses Microsoft and Windows related products. There are three milestones that Windows users need to keep in mind that are coming fast.

Needless to say, Some Significant Patches are Needed Now

I thought I'd take a minute to update people on a couple of items that are of interest in the computing community:

May 12 Presentation on Windows & Release Candidate

Well, I got a little lazy and wasn't able to keep up on my one blog per month standard. So this month I decided to drop two blogs in for the month. Who knows? I could add a third  ...

To support my presentation for this coming week's CEBUG meeting, I thought it would be best to reinforce some of my comments for those who were at the meeting and wanted some of the links, and specific information I gave in the presentation.

Laptop Security

I thought I'd pass along these guidelines that I read recently from the Security Awareness email from the SANs Institute:

1. Make sure your security software has not expired. If it has expired, renew or replace it immediately.

Bill to create Headache for Users

A bill has been placed on the House floor that requires that ISPs and wireless access point operators keep and maintain logs of Internet access for a minimum of two years. Aimed at the efforts to track down child porn traders, terrorists, and whoever else would fall under it's guidelines, this bill on the surface would seem to be a powerful weapon in tracking and bringing to justice these miscreants.

Spyware Tips

I thought I'd pass along some good tips about spyware that I read recently in some material I get from the SANs Institute:

Hello and Welcome

I thought I'd use this space to followup on my meeting presentations and make some "between meeting" comments about PCs, software and the industry in general. I'll reserve my comments and help for the help forum and the other forums on this list.

The website for the PSI software I mentioned at the last CEBUG meeting is: http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/
